This podcast is dedicated to all the prisoners around and about, hope it provides some relief to those fortunate enough to have access to the internet. For those unable to access hopefully someone can pass the show along. Currently prison populations are an ever growing resource for certain business/vested interests and prison populations continue to grow at alarming rates.
"One in four prisoners in Australia is indigenous and their over-representation in the jail system is only getting worse, a new report states.
Aborigines are 13 times more likely to be locked up than other Australians, while the proportion of indigenous women being incarcerated has tripled in the past 20-odd years.
Half of the 10- to 17-year-olds in corrective institutions are indigenous." http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/5678350/a-quarter-of-prisoners-are-indigenous/
With Aboriginal people comprising only 1%-2% of the total Australian population such a rate of incarceration paints an ugly picture of the true, parlous state of Indigenous/Settler relations. As a recent signatory to the United Nations "Recognition of Indigenous Rights Agreement", the dire situation of some of Australia's aboriginal population should be drawing widespread, worldwide condemnation.
The rising tide of African-American and Latino-American prisoners on marijuana possession charges is also alarming, with the US imprisoning more of its population than any other nation in the world.
"* We have increased the number of people behind bars from roughly 500,000 people in 1980 to 2.3 million today.
* In the U.S., we have less than 5 percent of the world's population, but almost 25 percent of the world's prisoners." http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/140502/hey_progressives%3A_why_don%27t_you_care_about_the_%22drug_war%22_like_you_care_about_other_issues/
And let's not forget Leonard Peltier, "Peltier has been behind prison bars for more than half of his life (he turned 63 this past September)."http://lpdctexas.blogspot.com/
Yes there are prisoners who have committed terrible deeds, but there are also unconscionable numbers of peoples incarcerated for victimless crimes, who with better programs implemented by governments would provide valuable service to their communities.
And let's not forget those prisoners of political conscience, throughout the globe, imprisoned by government's unwilling to share alternative ideas on a country's future possible direction(Aung Saan Su Kyi of Myanmar/Burma is known by the world, but how many countless others remain invisible), under corrupt governments' reigns of terror.
To these people, I hope sanity will prevail, and those ogres feasting on the misery of others will find some humanity before avariciously seeking inhumane profits.
